A Short Rant About Republicans, Because of a Democrat

Umm… I know that sound weird, but… the truth is I’ve been avoid politics since Obama won a second term. Mostly because I’m so disappointed. I thought there were more people in the States who thought like I did. But it turns out there are more people in the States who want free stuff.
So… My ranting is caused by an article a liberal friend posted on FB (yes, I’m addicted to social media. Sue me). Although, the more I talk to him, the more convinced I am that he’s not REALLY a liberal. Deep down inside I think he’s a Libertarian, but like  a few people I know (myself included) he’s just not comfortable voting for a “Third Party” candidate. Either way… That should be a working link to the actual article and below is the conversation that ensued.

MY LIBERAL FRIEND shared a link.

Not a clue…these guys have learned absolutely NOTHING!

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/27/house-committee-chairs-all-white-men_n_2201136.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

HIS MALE FRIEND: They continue to believe they lost the election b/c they ‘weren’t conservative enough’. Let em, to their detriment. Can’t wait for the 2014 Congressional elections.

HIS FEMALE FRIEND: that ilk is specically designed for white men only

HIS MALE FRIEND: HEY, Shawn and I resemble that remark

ME (MY RANT): Huff Post as a source? shame. Altho, I am disinfranchised w/ the Republican Party… The problem most of them need to realize (or maybe have realized) is that Dems are just plain better at the minority/ women votes… both “groups” (in general) were more worried about different issues than the Repubs (who thought they could run and win on the economy), while the Dems realized that pounding women with birth control and “womans rights” and minorities with immigration issues would (and quite possible did) win them the election. Then you add in the “lower & middle class” who got tossed the entitlement bone… Oh dear, I think I just ranted on your status. Don’t forget you’re my favorite Liberal, and I’m not a Republican. 😉

MY LIBERAL FRIEND: LOL! we need a face to face, but…c’mon. look at the state level republicans. immigration crack downs, early voting, anti-abortion laws (why are women REQUIRED to have an ultra sound even if not medically necessary?) , planned parenthood defunding (really? aren’t we throwing out the baby with the bathwater here?) The republicans truly don’t have an umbrella opened wide enough. and unless they wake up to the new demographic shaping america, they will cease to exist.

HIS MALE FRIEND: Alienating minorities and women lost the election for the conservatives. Asians, who did not benefit at all from any ‘Obama gifts’ like the Dream Act voted for Democrats in the 70th percentile b/c of the rhetoric on the right re immigration. Women felt it in the state legislatures dominated by conservatives that passed bills requiring unnecessary and invasive ultrasounds, to the US House passing a bill that redefined rape. Did it to themselves, and I haven’t gotten to the appearance of favoring the rich over the middle class. Did it to themselves.

ME (RANT CONT.): haha throwing out the baby? Literally. I think things like PP AND PBS should be privately funded… like charities. as for the new demographic… I think there will be lots of defection from BOTH parties to the Libertarians by the next Presidential election. Hopefully.
@HIS MALE FRIEND… I agree. I just don’t think they should fall in line with the Dems. The parties are so diff. on things like the economy…
the Federal gov has too much control over people’s lives. Let the border states deal with immigration how they want, let the people of each state make the choice to allow abortion, gay marriage, school choice, etc…
OOOPS. Sorry MY LIBERAL FRIEND, I just did it again. I do need to see your face. I’m still think I can convince you that you’re not an Icky Liberal.

HIS FEMALE FRIEND: pounding women with birth control? that’s really offensive

ME (BEING POLITE): Patricia- I’m sorry that was offensive. It was a poor word choice. I was too lazy to spellcheck & type “inundated”.

Yup… pounding is offensive. I think I might post the “Day after Election Rant” soon. PS… please excuse my AWEFUL grammer & spelling! I get so heated, and i have clumsy fingers.
Happy Thursday!

Creme de Menthe Brownies, Bailey’s Breakfast Scones, & Bourbon Maple Cupcakes

Confession: I’m pretty embarrassed about how badly I’ve been slacking and not posting my weekly baking. I’ve been sort of apathetic the past month or so… lots of stuff going on… Neither Hubs or I have found a job yet, my mom & stepdad came to visit last weekend (and brought their hyperactive shepard-mix dog with them), then we headed over to my Nana’s place in MD Wednesday, so we could spend Thanksgiving with her… meeeeh, It’s not that I don’t love my family… I’m just so set in my ways I hate messing with my routine. AND my running routine was all messed up last week, mostly because I’ve also been kind of sick, and whatever’s wrong with my chest has been acting up again. Boo hiss.
But, because there’s really no excuse for being a downer… it’s time to update! I figured I’d just throw the ones I’ve missed into one super long post. Sorry!
I was feeling kind of lazy today (I usually take today off from running, but I had to “make up” the 2 days I missed last week) so I cheated and made White Chocolate PB&J Puppy Chow from The Picky Palate. You should browse her blog for some major food porn.
I should mention that at some point in my slackerness I lost the notes I took for the Brownies AND the scones. So I’m posting those from memory.  Anyhow… here are the last 3ish weeks of baking! Enjoy!

Crème De Menthe Brownies
Not much to say about these… beside the fact that they are sooooo freaking yummy! I really like fudgey brownies, and these don’t disappoint me. However, I did second guess myself a few times during the baking. They don’t really seem “done” until they’re cooled completely. I guess it’s because they’re so fudgey. My Andes and both kinds of chocolate chips also melted completely away in the middle! The only place the chunks survived was closer to the edges. Weird.

Bailey’s Scones
This recipe was originally the Grand Marnier Scones from Janet at the Ashley Inn. I just changed out the GM for Bailey’s, and made mine half the size. Make sure you don’t over knead the dough, it makes it kind of tough. Otherwise I really love these. They’re supposed to be for breakfast, but Hubs and I definitely eat them as often as possible. I esp enjoyed them with a Bailey’s riddled coffee. Just sayin…

Bourbon Maple Cupcakes with Whipped Bourbon Maple Chocolate Ganache Frosting
Yah, so I really felt the need to make something (kind of) seasonal for Thanksgiving this past week. Hence the Wild Turkey American Honey I used in these cupcakes. Honestly, I also wanted another crack at the Maple Bacon Whiskey Cupcakes (without the bacon this time). They still caved in, and I still can’t figure out what I did wrong. Grrrr! These guys don’t have much flavor.  I was really hoping the maple syrup would come out more, but all I could really taste was the ganache. Speaking of ganache… next time I make it to be whipped (as a frosting); I’ll probably use milk chocolate instead of semi-sweet. It’s not quite as sweet as I like. I also forgot to time how long it took me to “whip” it. I think it was close to five minutes, maybe as little as 3. Eeek! Overall these cupcakes are good, but not excellent, they could use a tweek or two. They did get eaten at Thanksgiving dinner with the family, and nobody spit ‘em back out so… success? Pretty close.

Happy Baking!

Presidential Cookies Filled with Sprinkles

Dyed Republican & Democrat cookies filled with chocolate sprinkles, and decorated with fondate stars & stripes!!
Presidential Cookies “How To”:
  1. Make the sugar cookie dough.
  2. Divide it in half. Color one half red, and the other blue.
  3. Line a container, approximately the size of your cookie cutter, with plastic wrap.
  4. Put the red half of your dough in the bottom of the container & flatten it.
  5. Shape the blue half to approximately the same size, and place it on top of the red dough.
  6. Cover and freeze overnight.
  7. Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees F, and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  8. Slice the cookie dough into 1/8 – ¼ inch slices, cut your cookies, saving the excess dough (separated), you can use it to make more cookies! If you use the left over dough stack and freeze it for a little, the firm dough is easier to cut.
  9. You’ll need 3 of each shape, place one of them on the cookie sheet facing the opposite way. That will be so the back side of your cookie (after it’s been put together) won’t be browned!
  10. Bake them for about 6 minutes.
  11. As soon as they come out of the oven, cut a hole in one of the cookies facing the same way. That’s where the sprinkles will go!
  12. Allow them to cool completely before moving.
  13. Make your “glue” to stick the layers together. Using 1 cup of powdered sugar & 2 tablespoons of milk, stir until all the powdered sugar has been melted.
  14. Glue the cookie with the cut out to the browned side of the bottom cookie, fill the hole with sprinkles, then “glue” the top cookie on.
  15. Lay flat for 30 minutes before handling. Now is a good time to make your fondant, and cut out the stars & stripes!
  16. Using the “glue” and a food safe paint brush stick the stripes on, gently flatten them. Then do the stars.
  17. Eat a cookie!
So… I’ve wanted to make these cookies ever since I saw this super duper awesome tutorial for piñata cookies! AND here are my notes:
  • I didn’t have a container as tall as the donkey or as wide as the elephant, so I sliced the dough, rolled it out a little bit, cut the shape, then saved the extra.
  • I can’t stand to waste things, and when they made theirs, they baked the dough, THEN cut out the shapes… It makes sense that way, so all the cookies will be even, and they’ll stand up better, but I just couldn’t waste the dough.
  • I used a small biscuit cutter to make the elephant cut out, and a small rectangle for the donkey cut out.
  • I saved the dough, from the first round of cookies to make more (red on the bottom, blue on the top) cookies, then I used the extra from THOSE to make a few tyedyed cookies!
  • I rolled out the fondant to about 1/8 of an inch thick, and cut out the stars using a small cookie cutter, and cut out the stripes out with a cookie cutter.
  • You probably only need to make half the amount of fondant from the recipe… I had plenty left over.
  • I totally gave myself a blister cutting out all those stars!!
  • The awesome cookie cutters came from CopperGifts.com
Happy baking.
-Hey Waitress!!

PS when I made these cookies I couldn’t think of a fitting name for them. I really want to call them “Your Candidate Is Full Of… Chocolate Sprinkles… Cookies”. You know, because the sprinkles are supposed to look like poop. But it’s too long. Sad face.

I also want to remind people how important it is to vote. I love politics. Mostly… I love the thought that my vote might make a difference. It’s import to get involved, because if you don’t… you’ll have no right to complain when things don’t go the way you want. I’ll stop now, because if I keep going this is going to turn into a craaaazy long rant, and I don’t want to take away from the cookies. Just GO VOTE!

Happy Election Tuesday!! I can’t wait to see how it all turns out!!
